MAFAC / ACS cantilever brakes

     There was a bit of chatter about these oddities on The CR (Classic Rendezvous) list a couple days ago. MAFAC was a French bicycle component company with a long history of quality and pioneering products. in the 1980's however, the company went bankrupt and everything was sold off. ACS, an American component company, mostly known for BMX products bought some of the tooling when everything was being sold.   Mountain bikes & cantilever brakes were coming into fashion, so they offered them on a horse shoe mount that could attach to standard side pull brake mounts.  Murray and Roadmaster built many bikes with them, as it was cheaper than frame mounted canti’s at the time. This is a crappy short cut solution and kind of makes me sad in a way to see such a reputable brand (MAFAC) reduced to this level.
     This is a set of those brakes with the horse shoe holders. I have seen these next to my office for a while now and always wondered what the story was / connection of MAFAC and ACS. Well, now I know and so do you. Thanks you internet.

Clement tire sample case

         Found this gem the other day going through some stuff. It is a salesman's sample case showing all the different tires clement sold at the time. i am dating this to 1963-ish because of the English price list and catalog i found inside the case. I love finding stuff like this that can be traced back to a specific shop and era. the paper is nice and yellowed with nice type. The catalog is also very high quality, they definately do not make them like this anymore.

    

For sale: 57CM Condor complete bike

     Here is a nice bike that needs a good home. 57CM seat tube CTC Condor in great shape. Condor is a well established British company that was started in 1948 Condor history that built and still does build great bikes. Tom Simpson rode for them and W.B. (Bill) Hurlow headed up their shop for a while. W.B. Hurlow
     This bike is from the early to mid 1980's I believe. Nice lugged construction with long points on the lugs and almost fully wrapping seat stay caps. It also is built with Campagnolo vertical drop outs. I am not sure if it is a re-paint or not. Nice gloss black finish. The measurements are as follows:

• 57 CM CTC seat tube
• 57 CM CTC top tube.
• 33" stand over height (with air in the tires.
• 700C clincher Mavic MA2 rims laced to Smimano Sealed Mech. low flange hubs.

• Campagnolo NR front derailleur
• T.A. bottom bracket
• Campagnolo SR clamp on shifters.
• Campagnolo NR brake calipers and Weinmann aero brake levers.
• Campagnolo NR head set
• Cinelli 1R stem 120mm extension (missing front logo button)
• Cinelli Giro D' Italia bars 42CM wide CTC
• SR Laprade 27.2 seat post and Specialized road saddle.
• Campagnolo top tube brake cable clamps
• No pedals.
• Black pleather padded bar tape

     Bike is pretty much ready to ride. Although I would suggest getting it tuned up as it is sold AS IS.
No stuck parts. You will not be disappointed with this machine. it is also extremely light weight.

For Sale: Bruce Gordon tig-welded touring frame and fork set 47CM

     This is a good winter project build. It is a Bruce Gordon tig-welded touring frame and fork set. Mr. Gordon is a highly skilled and well established American frame builder. Here is a link to his website where you can read about his history and see his work Bruce Gordon Cycles. He is mostly known for his lugged construction bikes, but he is one of the best when it comes to tig-welded frames in my opinion.
     this frame has one or two issues. one of the rear brake cable stops has some corrosion around it, nothing fatal, just some rust (see photo). Also, the underside of the top tube has corrosion along the length. again, nothing fatal, but it is there (see photo). The tube could be replaced if one was so inclined, but I think it will be OK.  Frame and fork are sold AS IS. That being said, here are the measurements:

• 47 CM seat tube CTC
• 54CM top tube CTC
• 135mm rear spacing
• English threaded BB shell
• takes 26.8mm seat post
• 700C wheel size
• cantilever studs front and rear
• 28 1/2" stand over height (at seat tube), 30" stand over height (at head tube) no air in tires or headset installed.
• Lots of braze-ons for fenders, water bottles and low rider racks on the fork. 
• Serial number is G05293 I talked to Bruce Gordon and he told me the frame was built in 1993.

     Dark grey paint with original Bruce Gordon decals.  Set it up as a touring bike or swanky single speed city bike with a chain tensioner. Frame has vertical rear drop outs, fenders, racks, the whole nine yards! I think this would make a great around town TCB bike!
