Sorry for the lack of posts this past week. I was home sick with the flu from hell. Toddler germs are lethal! This is a pretty cool little trinket / promo item from New Departure. Beauty and the Boob, kind of like getting a treat in a Cracker Jack box. I like this idea. It is advertising the Model D hubs, so that dates it. Original in the package (envelope). These are rare as they are paper and easily destroyed or discarded. Enjoy.

Cool photo of an old bike shop
This is an old post card, and on the front is a really cool old bike shop. I am not sure of the exact age, but it is at least 1892. I say that because there is a candle stick telephone on the counter, and those were first available in 1892-3. Note the awesome New Departure bell display next to the phone on the counter. Also of note are the carbide lamps in the display case. That may be an early'ish motorcycle the man is sitting on, I am not sure though.

Cooler weather endeavors
Here is a suitcase full of New Departure Model 1A hubs that our mechanic Phil recently found all the parts for, overhauled and cleaned up beautifully. With our season drawing to a close we now have the time to complete these types of projects. Email for pricing at: bikeville@gmail.com

Columbia Sports Roadster
Keeping in step with the New Departure posts, this is a pretty awesome bike we recently got in. it is a Columbia Sports Roadster model from the 1940's. It has the blacked out New Departure hubs and handle bars (war time effort) which look great against the original black paint. Ornate chain guard and cool painted and striped rims. The decals are in great shape (original). I really like American decals of this era, great color, design, and typography. Really nice survivor. My favorite part about this bike are the Pennsylvania lightweight tires. I wonder if they were made by Carlisle? This bike really looks like a Schwinn new World model at a quick glance, but something about it is more appealing to my eye. Enjoy.

For Sale: New Departure Model D coaster brake hub with 2 speed conversion
Rare item offered today for sale. New Departure model D coaster brake hub with complete 2 speed conversion. 36 hole drilling. Shell and coaster arm appear to be new old stock. Blacked out for the war time effort. These were offered in the 1940's- 1950's as an upgrade to the popular single speed Model D hubs. This has the earlier shifter which clamps to the top tube as well as the pulley wheel which also clamps to the top tube close to the seat tube. Later versions place the shifter on the handle bars. Cable length is 34 3/4" long. Hub currently has a 12 tooth inch pitch cog attached, which can be switched out or removed completely. Recently overhauled and is in great working order. All hardware turns freely. Cost is $300.00 for everything plus shipping and handling which will have to be calculated depending on location. Local pick up is good too. We can also deliver to upcoming tri state area swap meets (Hershey, trexlertown).

Spring 2013 swap meet photos
Photos were taken in Copake(NY), Grand Rapids(OH), and Saline(MI).
Early turn of the century racer. Unknown maker. restored.
Mid to late 1930s Schwinn World. Equipped with New Departure track hubs, Messenger saddle, and Schwinn Paramount stem, and what appears to be Lauterwasser handlebars.
Schwinn Streamline Aerocycle
Beautiful lineup of balloon tire bikes- Shelby, Schwinns, and even an Elgin thrown in there.
Schwinn Cyclotrucks. The seller had 3 Cyclotrucks and a frameset. The black "US Army" one is prewar because it has a reinforced headtube and rear facing dropouts.
Rare Elgin Twin 60.
Early turn of the century hubs.
Nice selection of clean and restored BMX bikes.
Unique bottom bracket reinforcement on what might be a Bastide.
A Flying Gate design, but I have never seen one with the curved 'loop' under the seattube. Appears to be 1950s- dropouts and other fittings. Takes a unique unit type bottom bracket.

Pierce Arrow
Pierce Arrow. As you can see, there are a couple strange things about this bike. The hanging tank is incorrect, and there is no need for that lamp mounted to the fork, and the wheels are incorrect. I date this from the 1910s.
Very nice bend to the racing handlebars.
Beautiful Mesinger Supreme Racer seat, I don't think I have ever seen one so nice before.
Incorrect New Departure Model D coaster brake hub. "black out" produced during WWII.
Interesting offset placement of the seattube.

Early New Departure Controller hub
New Departure Controller coaster brake hub. This is an early one, notice the brake arm on the driveside(no cog affixed in the photo). It is also takes straight-pull(or sometimes referred to as button head) spokes.
New Departure began in 1888 producing doorbells and by 1898, they produced their first bicycle coaster brake hub. They later were purchased by General Motors in 1916. New Departure hubs, the later model D hubs particularity, were known for their great modulation in braking and were found on popular Schwinn Phantoms bicycles.
(from researching, this appears to be the only photographs of the New Departure Controller hub online. I hope to keep putting more weird and esoteric bicycle parts online)

Copake swap meet and 500th Blog post
Copake swap meet was set with perfect weather this year. Above, the line of cars was just starting to file into the field at sunrise. Copake is the bike swap for Wheelmen types and with the 2nd Annual ride afterwards, it is great for collectors who want to ride their cool old bikes, and see others doing the same. Bikes and parts are not just limited to the turn of the 20th century, there is something for almost every collector.
Below are some pictures of interesting items I saw there-
Large flange Chater Lea Hubs with GB aluminum wingnuts. The axles were fitted with a grease fitting.
Early Dursley Pedersen gear hub.
Weird New Departure hub with large flange added. I have never seen this before and couldn't figure out why it was added on the non-driveside.
Unusual early pedal bike- Crypto Bantam (thanks brian!). Smaller wheels and there seemed to be some sort of gear mechanism in front hub/pedal crank.
Early 1970s Raleigh Professional with Campagnolo Nuovo Record group.
Durkopp track frame with a mix of parts. FB hubs, Stronglight 93 right arm, mod 49 left arm. Brooks Swallow saddle, Philippe adjustable stem.
Dayton in pieces. maybe you could call it a build-a--bike.
Nice selection of early lamps.
Selection of early hubs.
JP Weigle's new bike, freshly painted the previous day.
Gathering for the 2nd annual 10 mile bike ride.
Stop near Bash Bish Falls, while on the bike ride.
1939 Raleigh Tourist. beautiful.
